Port Otago has reached a critical point in its development -- development that will cement Port Chalmers as a key part of New Zealand's international supply chain.

To prepare Port Chalmers for the next 30 years, Port Otago has over the past 2 years been exploring the issues and options associated with securing visits by bigger ships. A project team of local and national specialists in science, engineering and logistics has now completed the assessment work, and a resource consent application has now been lodged with the Otago Regional Council.

This project comprises three major elements:

  • to deepen and widen the harbour channel to Port Chalmers;
  • to dispose of dredging spoil at sea; and
  • to extend the wharves and berths at Port Chalmers.
  • Port Otago lodged the Application and Assessment of Environmental Effects with the Otago Regional Council on the 26th of May 2010. The application will be publically notified and following the ORC receipt of submissions, a hearing is likely to be in October 2010.
