Port Chalmers is the primary South Island port for the cruise ship industry. It’s location near the world-famous Milford Sound and Fiordland region makes Port Chalmers the ideal port of call immediately before or after visiting Fiordland.
The Otago Peninsula is celebrated as the world’s only mainland Albatross breeding colony at Taiaroa Head and various other ocean bird, seal and penguin species, including one of the world’s rarest, the Yellow Eyed Penguin. Dunedin is also home to some of New Zealand’s top fashion designers and vibrant cafes and bars. It is widely regarded as the best example of a Victorian and Edwardian heritage city in the southern hemisphere.
Dunedin’s rugged hinterland can be accessed via the Taieri Gorge Railway, which pulls up right beside the cruise ships at Port Chalmers.

Port Otago Limited takes its cruise ship responsibilities seriously. It has established an independent company (Fiordland Pilot Services Limited) to provide guaranteed professional pilot services to the industry in Fiordland. This was in direct response to a Maritime New Zealand risk assessment that identified the navigational hazards presented by Fiordland’s weather extremes and remote location. Fiordland Pilot Services has fully trained Fiordland pilots and is currently training additional pilots. It is the only company operating in the Fiordland area that has a fully endorsed training manual and operating procedures.
