Effective from 1 July 2004, ports and shipping worldwide must comply with security measures as detailed under the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code).  The Maritime Security Act 2004 covers the New Zealand legislative requirements and is in place to safeguard port users and the local community, and to provide for the security of trade and tourism. Port Otago Ltd has been verified by Maritime New Zealand as being compliant with all international security requirements.

All entry to the port is controlled and subject to the possession of acceptable photographic identification.  Entering any of the port facilities is deemed as consent for ID checks and searching.  Failure to consent to the security measures in place will result in admittance being denied.

Visitors wishing to undertake business within the port area or at the main Administration office at Port Chalmers should schedule their call and arrangements in advance.  A photo ID will be required to be shown on arrival.

While the port and wharf area are closed to general public access, very good views of the port and harbour at Port Chalmers can be obtained from the hill areas overlooking the port, especially Flag Staff hill and the Scott Memorial viewing sites (follow the road signs).

For regular visitors to the port (such as truck operators), special arrangements apply and we will be pleased to discuss your specific operational requirements further.

Dunedin City prides itself on the warm welcome provided to visitors to the city and Port Otago will continue to work hard to make the visit a safe and happy one for all our visitors.  Welcoming or farewelling passengers must be conducted outside the port.  Viewing of cruise vessels must also take place at appropriate vantage points outside the port at the sites identified above.

Those vessels affected by the ISPS Code requirements should submit to the Port Facility Security Officer the Advance Notice of Arrival forms and crew/visitor/passenger/vendor lists, at least 24 hours prior to arrival at the Pilot Station or Anchorage.  This detail can be faxed to 64-3- 472 9712 or harbourcontrol@portotago.co.nz.   All crew and ship passengers are required to carry photo ID when proceeding ashore.
