Port Otago currently uses an online recruitment system called QJumpers. We encourage all applications to be made online using this system. We track all applications across New Zealand to ensure we have a consistent and fair approach towards all candidates (including current employees).
For all applications you should attach your current resume (CV) and cover letter, and any qualifications applicable to your application.
You are also required to fill out a Port Otago Employment Application Form. The questions on this form help us to determine candidate suitability for specific roles. It is also used as a disclosure information form around fitness to work and criminal convictions. It is important that you let us know at the very earliest if you have any conditions that may impact on your ability to be employed. Port Otago is covered by the Maritime Security Act (2004).
If you have difficulty in attaching any part of your application it may be that your file is too large or is not in a supported format. To reduce the size of your files, try removing any pictures you may have in your CV and make sure it is saved in one of the following formats:
Once applications have closed we will review all applications received. We try to screen all applications within a few weeks of the role closing, though for some roles this may take slightly longer due to the number of applicants. We will notify you via email if there are significant delays.
Yes. The benefit of the online application process is that we are able to easily track multiple job applications. We can work with you to ensure you are able to explore each opportunity.
Yes. The application will be stored in the Talent Bank of QJumpers. Use this form to register your interest.
You will receive an email from the recruitment management system QJumpers. Please review carefully as you may have overlooked some important information around your application.
If we determine that you have the skill set we are looking for we may arrange a 15 – 30 minute phone interview to discuss your experience and expectations. This is a good opportunity for you to expand on your career highlights.
One of the HR team will contact you by phone or email to confirm you are being recommended for an on-site interview. The HR person will brief you on how the interview will be conducted and who will be present at the interview. To prepare for the interview you will need to have a copy of the Position Description.
Once the interview has been completed we will keep you informed as to the next steps in our recruitment process.
You must contact the HR team as soon as possible. If you are unable to attend your interview due to unforeseen circumstances we will try to reschedule.
You may also be asked to undertake some assessments to measure your abilities relevant to the role. This usually takes place either before the on-site interview or at the same time as the interview. The type of assessment varies with the role you may be applying for.
If you reach this stage of the process it is likely that you will be a preferred candidate and we will need to confirm your employment history, performance and work style.
We will request your permission to contact at least two referees. These referees must be your current or past direct managers.
Remember at this stage you will need to talk to your referees and ask their permission for us to contact them.
All roles will require a number of checks to be satisfactorily completed. Any offer will be made conditional on these background checks being completed to our satisfaction.
Sometimes all of these background checks are not confirmed until after employment has started. Please note that any information obtained will be checked with you for accuracy. You should be aware that if you have not given Port Otago information that is relevant to the background checks or your general suitability for employment or if you have provided misleading or false information, then this may be grounds for dismissal without notice.
Once a decision has been made conditional on the background checks you will be contacted to discuss the details of the conditional offer.
A contract pack including all your pre-employment documents will be sent in hard copy for you to review, sign and return to the HR team.
You will be notified by email by the QJumpers system. In many cases, due to the high volume of applications, we are not able to provide individual feedback. All applications are kept online in our Talent Bank in QJumpers for up to 12 months.
