Port Chalmers is the primary South Island port for the cruise ship industry. Its location near the world-famous Milford Sound and Fiordland region makes Port Chalmers the ideal port of call immediately before or after visiting Fiordland.
The Otago Peninsula is celebrated as having the world’s only mainland Albatross breeding colony, at Taiaroa Head, and various other ocean bird, seal and penguin species, including one of the world’s rarest, the Yellow Eyed Penguin. Dunedin features beautiful architecture, galleries and museums, as well as famous factory tours at Cadbury's and local brewery Speight's. It is widely regarded as the best example of a Victorian and Edwardian heritage city in the southern hemisphere.
Dunedin’s rugged hinterland can be accessed via the Taieri Gorge Railway, which pulls up right beside the cruise ships at Port Chalmers.
