Open day attracts 3000 locals

Port Otago hosted more than 3000 Port Chalmers locals, customers and staff at the official opening of its newly-extended multipurpose wharf on Otago Anniversary Day.

Chief executive Kevin Winders says the day was about thanking locals for putting up with the port as a neighbour during the project. "A big thanks to everyone that took to the time to come on site. We had such great feedback and it was a genuine pleasure to be hosting everyone and seeing how much peple were enjoying themselves."

The day had a festival vibe, with food trucks, face painting, a fishing competition and live music. The tug boat rides were a big hit throughout the day, as were tours of the container ship Rio Negro.

The 135m extension pushes the wharf out as far as the Boiler Point reclamation edge – a total of 431m.
