Port Otago will support VERMAS standards for container weighing from 1 July 2016. Verified Gross Mass (VGM) details are required for all containers before they will be accepted on to the Port Chalmers container terminal or loaded on to a vessel. If no VGM is supplied a container stop will be applied until a VGM is supplied.
For containers packed on-wharf at Port Chalmers, Port Otago will provide a weighing solution and electronically send the required container weight/s to the shipping line and cargo owner.
Port Otago has been working towards providing a simple and consistent process for managing the requirements of the upcoming VGM regulation.
