How Port Otago monitors noise

Port Otago is an essential piece of the Otago/Southland supply chain infrastructure, contributing to the health and future growth of our local and national economy. We are conscious that our main site is situated in the heart of Port Chalmers’ and we work hard to be a responsible and good neighbour. Managing noise is important and we are continually looking for ways to reduce and better manage the noise we make, and ensure the right measures are in place to mitigate noise effects.

Port Otago monitors noise from four points in our community:

·       Scotia Street, Flagstaff Hill (blue)

·       Cemetery, Port Chalmers (yellow)

·       Henry St, Careys Bay (green)

·       Light Tower 4, Port Chalmers container terminal (red)

As well as measuring the average noise level, these monitors automatically record audio of any loud noise events (above 75dB). Such events can be generated by port activity, trains, wind, local vehicles, or birds close to the microphone.

Port Otago worked with Microsoft to develop software capable of analysing these audio recordings and determining their likely source. This groundbreaking system allows for much greater analysis and management of noise events from port activity.
